I graduated from the University of Liverpool Medical School in June 2006 with an MBChB (Honours) and am approaching the end of a two-year Foundation rotation at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary and Westmorland General Hospital. As well as time in general surgery and medicine, this has included a four month period in a research job. Subsequently I hope to pursue specialist training in anaesthetics. I am also a Teacher in the School of Medicine at the University of Liverpool, teaching students completing the course in Lancaster.

My interest in patient safety began at Medical school, when the ‘hot topic' of the time was the introduction of the European Working Time Directive. At that time I considered the effects this would have on anaesthetists' working habits. I have continued looking at a number of aspects of patient safety during my research post. I am considering clinical incidents reported to the National Patient Safety Agency, particularly with regard to equipment problems. I have also recently analysed incidents relating specifically to the use of ‘throat packs' in anaesthetics and have prepared a report to the Royal College of Anaesthetists Professional Standards Committee on the issue.
Outside of medicine my interests include walking, and travelling. I am always keen to find a reason to see new places: as well as Liverpool I managed to spend a period of my undergraduate training in both Sydney, and Linköping, Sweden. Around this I have travelled extensively in Australia and Europe, as well as at least short trips to every continent except Antarctica (yet!).
